Hello everybody, I just started to learn about the linux kernel and I am very excited about it... but very lost. I would like to know if there's any mentor program or anything similar to that. Hi Maria, Most of what I learned about the Linux kernel I learned in an operating systems course at uni, the note for which are freely available at http://cs.anu.edu.au/student/comp3300/notes.php A good place to start is with rolling your own kernel, for which there is a ton of resources to be found. Usually it's best to follow special steps suited to your distro. Another really good starting place for getting a high level view of how the kernel fits in with the entire eco system is doing the Linux from Scratch http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ tutorials. If you want to dive straight into the code, though, try finding a simple USB gadget like a Nerf launcher or something and reverse engineering a driver. No harm in giving it a go, it's a perfectly good thing to aim towards! Definitely don't get disheartened if you can't find what's causing it at first, the source tree is quite large. When you're trying to familiarize yourself with the code, this is a very handy site that lets you browse random kernel releases: http://lxr.linux.no/#linux+v3.6.6/ And the staging directory is full of drivers that need love. See if you happen to have any of this hardware, or are willing to invest a few bucks to buy whatever it is this is place to look for examples of bad code! http://lxr.linux.no/#linux+v3.6.6/drivers/staging/ Written up at: http://lwn.net/Articles/324279/ fyi: If I recall correctly, if a driver sits in staging for too long without anyone working on it, it will get deleted from the kernel tree eventually. The hope is that devs will take pity on those drivers from time to time and improve them. When the quality is good enough they should be submitted for moving into a more stable part of the kernel source tree. Greg
Hi, you can try to write simple driver. I recommend to read http://lwn.net/Kernel/LDD3/ and http://blog.rlove.org/2010/07/linux-kernel-development-third-edition.html. the kernel is a great piece of code, some studies (fs, drivers, scheduler) and then choose a bug. N.
