Is it a distro /sbin/depmod built with odd config? kmod added support for this back in kmod 2 back in 2011-ish (we're up to kmod 20)....
Well I don't know, it's the tool packaged by Debian and it's the most recent version among those offered, i.e. 20-1. Thanks, Shérab.
