Porting Interrupt registertion code from kernel 2.6 to kernel 4.14

Hello, I am trying to port my older KLM (Kernel Loadable Module) file (klm_prc.ko) which I insmod on kernel 2.6 and which used to register interrupt using following method:request_irq(INTR_ID, (void *)intr_isr, IRQF_DISABLED, "INTR ISR", NULL) However above call throws error when I insmod it on kernel 4.14 # > insmod klm_prc.ko klm_prc: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.KERNEL_VERSION 132619LINUX_VERSION_CODE 265728 unable to install INTR handlerFailed to install ISR 0insmod: can't insert 'klm_prc.ko': Resource temporarily unavailable# > My question is, how do I properly port this code to kernel 4.14 ? in other words, how to I register interrupt service routine (isr) in kernel version 4.14? thanks,Khalid. thanks,Khalid.

Which tree to track: linux-next or staging?

Hi I have had the opportunity to submit a few patches, which has been really fun. However, a while back i submitted patches for fixes that i realised after had already been patched in GregKH tree ... and i realised i had been developing against Linus's master branch, and not linux-next. But my question is, is it better to develop against linux-next or in newbies cases, one of GregKH's (staging) branches? Maybe staging/master or staging/staging-next? If you develop against linux-next, dont you run a pretty big chance of someone submitting to one of Greg's staging drivers prior to the merge into linux-next, since patches go to drivers/staging seemingly a lot more frequently than the merges into linux-next? Dear *Kernel Newbies* community, I am a second year student of computer science at the *University of London*. I've seen that the *Linux Foundation* is participating in the *Google Summer of Code 2024*, and would be interested in getting involved. I am primarily interested in the main kernel subsystem, however, I am open to the others too. I have tried some basic operating system development before, however, I am still much of a rookie. Regardless of whether I am chosen or not, I would be interested in participating in the community. Ultimately, I am here to deepen my understanding of operating systems, and contribute meaningfully to the *Linux *kernel, my favourite *UNIX* descendant. PHY drivers

Hi, I've got a question regarding phy drivers. Supposed that I want to use an ethernet phy device - in general - do I need a specific driver to handle this, or is it handled by some generic eth phy layer that can configure (through MDIO) and exchange data (through XMII) in a generic, vendor-agnostic way? Before submitting a driver for Casper Excalibur Laptops

Hi, I wrote a wmi driver for my laptop (Casper Excalibur G900, which is a Turkish laptop that is only sold in Turkey) because I was having random freezes (I think that is because of the it fails to limit power draw) on battery power and wanted to control my keyboard's rgb backlight. This is my first time coding in the Linux kernel, so I looked at other drivers and tried to do things similar. But I couldn't find a good example for rgb backlights. I have some questions: 1. Is it okay to control all of the keyboard leds with one attribute? There are 4 leds in my laptop: 3 keyboard leds and 1 corner led. It is possible to set all keyboard leds at once and when you change the brightness of one keyboard led, it changes the entire keyboard's brightness. And firmware doesn't support getting led data. In my implementation: a user writes to attribute a hexadecimal integer which includes led zone, brightness, mode, and color. When a user reads an attribute it returns the last led change. This feels hacky but makes the driver simpler. 2. Where should I put my driver? staging/ or platform/x86/? I'm planning to extend my driver to support more laptops from the same vendor. 3. Should I wait to extend support of the driver before submitting it? firefox does not start with 6.8-rc

Hi, compiled the latest staging kernel on my xubuntu laptop. It starts fine but I cannot start my firefox anymore. This happens only with kernel 6.8-rcx. With kernel 6.7 no issue at all. Find logs below. Found in some forum that it is fixed in some later rc on an other tree. Tried to find this patch series that fixes this. But was not able to. But anyway is this a kernel issue? Do the kernel developers care? Thanks for your support. Completion wait timeout error thrown by i2c-ismt.c driver

Hi, I have come across the following problem: Error: After pasting ~130kb text in console, multiple "ismt_smbus 0000:00:12.0: completion wait timed out" messages are seen in dmesg. Configuration: 1. Custom Debian-based operating system based on Linux kernel 6.1.25-13-amd64. 2. Sysrq is set to 16. 3. Following peripherals are present: a. Intel Corporation Atom Processor C3000 Series SMBus Contoller (Driver i2c_ismt). b. Serial controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor C3000 Series HSUART Controller (Driver 8250_mid) 4. The original baudrate of the serial controller is 115200, however, we configure its baudrate to 57600. 5. Model name: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU C3558 @ 2.20GHz; Number of cores = 4; RAM = 16GB. Additional observations: 1. The paste operation takes around 61 minutes. 2. Number of interrupts on serial controller during this time is around 175000. 3. Number of interrupts on SMBus controller during this time is around 346000. 4. When sysrq is set to 0, the problem does not occur. 5. The interrupts on the IRQ lines for serial driver and SMBus driver are serviced by the same core. 6. If I ensure that the interrupts on the serial and SMBus driver are managed by different cores, the problem does not occur. 7. During the paste process, the CPU usage of the core (that handles both interrupts) goes to 100%, then suddenly drops to 0%, before returning to normal values (around 90%). 8. If the baudrate is set to 115200 (original value), the problem does not occur. I studied the source code for the serial driver. I could not find anything which may have caused other interrupts to get blocked. I would appreciate any direction and/or explanation for this behavior.
