Send/receive ATA cmds from a linux kernel module

Hi All, I am trying to write a linux kernel module which can send/receive ATA SMART cmds to a HDD. The kernel module will take a set of actions based on the responses it receives from the HDD. I went through the ATA smart cmds spec and the "smartctl" user space code which sends the ATA cmds from user space via SG_IO ioctl cmd. I am not able to figure out how to open /dev/sda from kernel and achieve similar functionalities line "smartctl" tool from a kernel module. 1. Can someone point me to any sample code which tries to send ATA smart cmds from a kernel module instead of user space via ioctl? 2. Seems like I need to use some exported API from SG driver or libata. is this the right direction? 3. Please feel free to suggest how can I achieve this. Thanks, Sid

A bit of quilt

Hi, As I know quilt is used by maintainers. But kernel source code is maintained in git repo. So I want to know how git and quilt work together. In mutt I have seen that a mail sent by Mr. GregKH has quilt mail as user agent and git-send-email as x-mailer. It means he is using git-send-email as a backend for quilt mail. Last but not least, I think if a developer starts using quilt to maintain his diferent versions of a patch, it will ease a maintainer job. Regards, Amit Kumar

Which repository to clone ?

Hey, I am an absolute newbie , I tried to clone greg kroah-hartman's staging tree repository , somehow I was not able to boot in the kernel I built . Also, Does this command below give me the latest kernel code ? I have tried to clone another repository using the command below git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git while building with this , I had to install gcc plugin-dev . I don't understand why ? I didn't have to do it last time I built the kernel Regards

Also my compiler is saying things like , cyclomatic complexity followed by (i think) the parts it is compiling like driver names . Also it has been two hours since it started compiling and it isn't done yet . Is it because I ran $make instead $make -jx ? It was by mistake . MMCBLK CMD17/18 read data

Hello, I want to interface MMC card via SPI bus. However, I am getting CRC errors for CMD18. I tried reading partition table using CMD17 but still get errors. The same SDMMC card gets detected using SD interface. I want to compare the data of CMD18/CMD17 of SD and SPI modes. Please let me know how can I print the read data of the said commands in the block layer? I tried using the following code but it didn't help sg_copy_to_buffer(brq->data.sg, brq->data.sg_len, buf, 4096); and printed buf. Regards, Amit.
