I'm hoping I can get some advice/help here on this list with the above problem that is causing system lockups. I didn't want to post to the main list as I'm not sure it would be appropriate, I'm not even sure it's appropriate here but I'll give it a try. If someone has a better list to post to please let me know. I have noticed the lockups periodically since 09/13/2014. I can't remember what kernel version was in use then possibly kernel 3.13.0-35-generic or -36. It has continued periodically through versions -39; -40 and now to -43. The last time this has happened was Dec 13 14:40:57 localhost kernel: [154858.820009] [drm:i915_hangcheck_ elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... render ring idle. At times when it locks up I will have a cursor on a black screen and will have to press the power button to restart other times it will lockup whenever I'm in an application. At that time I can usually CTRL>ALT-F1 log in and run 'sudo reboot' to restart the system. Kernel version information is: Linux version 3.13.0-43-generic (buildd@tipua) (gcc version 4.8.2 (Ubuntu 4.8.2-19ubuntu1) ) #72-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 8 19:35:06 UTC 2014 (Ubuntu 3.13.0-43.72-generic 3.13.11.11) I'll be more than willing to submit any and all information anyone needs to help me solve this. One reply I received to my bug report is that I need to update my bios however I don't understand how that would solve the problem I'm having. Thanks in advance for any and all replies/assistance. Disable xhci_hcd USB 3.0 module

Hi guys, I have a notebook with 2 ports USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0. For some reason, kernel uses xhci_hcd module driver for all the three ports. Since I have an application that isn't compatilbe with xhci_hcd driver, I need disable it, and force the use of ehci-pc driver. My question is, since xhci_hcd is compiled inside the kernel, how can i do to disable it, without re-compile the kernel ? Thanks in advance. Gustavo.

How to send the [PATCH 0/x] kind of emails?

How does one send this kind of summary email? Is it generated manually or through some git format-patch/send-email foo magic? I have 4 patches that I have to submit. I'd like to send a summary email (0/4) explaining the changes. Thanks, -mandeep

framebuffer driver

Hi, I have started with a pci based vga card. after booting i can see the card in lspci , and after loading the driver as a module i can see that the driver is linked with the device using lspci -k. for initial testing, i am using the ioctl command FBIOPUT_CON2FBMAP , which is supposed to map a console to a particular framebuffer. But on switching to that console I am not getting anything in the monitor. To test if ioctl is getting executed, i inserted some debugging messages as pr_err() in that particular case of the ioctl function in drivers/video/fbdev/core/fbmem.c , but after calling the ioctl again i am not getting those debug messages in dmesg. Now i am in doubt about what is happening.. if ioctl is executed then my debug messages should have been printed. Can anyone please give me some hints about how to test this new vga card... and also why the debug messages from ioctl is not getting printed .. i think its almost a similar thing as https://lkml.org/lkml/2009/12/2/288 thanks sudip

Hi, -I am currently working on one embedded development board. -I have ported 3.0.31 kernel with my personal patches on it. -When I am trying to insert my module, it fails to allocate 4MB memory using kmalloc. -Below is a snapshot of *cat /proc/meminfo *command of my embedded linux system. [image: Inline image 1] -According to my understanding, LowFree parameter indicates free memory in kernel space which is around 536MB in this case. -There is a lot free space available in kernel space then why module fails in kmalloc of 4MB ? -Also find the attached log messages of dmesg Regards, Mehul

Query on git usage for creating patch with incremental commits

Hi, I know that it's not a typical Linux kernel related query but I reckon that people involved in Linux kernel testing/development might have gotten into similar situation. So, please bear with me for this rather generic framework related query. The scenario: 1: Cloned linux-next at time T1 $ git clone blahblah 2: Created a branch called development at T2 $ git checkout -b development 3: Made change1 in development branch and did a commit at T3 $ git commit -a 4: Made another commit in development branch and did another commit at time T4, but during this development phase, *some* of the changes that I made during my previous commit at time T3 were wrong, so had to remove *some* of the changes $ git commit -a 5: Now I create a branch called test, based off the master $ git checkout -b test origin/master 5: So my test branch(and also the master branch) is two commits behind the development branch. Now I wish to create a patch, based on my changes in development branch and apply that patch to my test branch for further testing. $ git format-patch origin/master -o patches The above command creates two patches, which I need to apply in an increasing order(0001 ---> 0002), otherwise, the patch won't work. So far so good, but what If, I am not particularly proud of the first patch, but have to send that anyway, If my patches are to be applied. Another approach would be to create another branch, say development-again, based of origin/master and make the necessary changes and then just create one patch file. But I was wondering that while doing development, don't we make commits in our working branches, which we think is correct, only to find it ridiculous later (say after few more commits in future) ? And what to do in such scenario ? Or how to use git to solve such scenario. Thanks, Kumar
