What i meant was that the userspace perf code is in tools/perf and the necessary kernel code to use perf on a system can be enabled using CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS and there may be some more config switches for a finer-grained activation of perf events. There are some dependency hints in the tools/perf/Makefile, but in the end I used trial and error to get all dependencies installed. Hope that helps! Philipp

Mapping of Device Physical Address to Kernel Virtual address

Dear All, Is it possible to map a physical address of a device to a known Kernel virtual address. I know about ioremap_xxx (...). which will map a physical address of a device to a kernel virtual address allocated by ioremap_xxx(...). For E.g. I have a device whose physical address range is 0x80008000 to 0x80008FFF. Is it possible to map this device physical address to a known virtual address range 0xF0008000 to 0xF0008FFF. My hardware configuration has 128 MB of system RAM which will have been MAPPED to the Kernel virtual address from 0xC0000000 to 0xC7FFFFFF Also is it possible to configure the vmalloc kernel virtual address region to a fixed range of 128 MB from 0xC8000000 to 0xCFFFFFFF Thanks, Prabhu

For smp, is it possible that a timer can be run at the same time on different cpus?

Hi all: The kernel I use is 2.6.29-rc3 and among the timer_list function there is "add_timer_on". For smp, Is it possible for a timer to be run at the same time on different cpus? suppose the following sequence: 1. a timer is being run on CPU 0, and the timer callback function use add_time_on to add itself on CPU 1; the expires is set to "jiffies + 0" to make it to be run as quickly as possible on CPU 1. 2. so there is chance that 2 cpus run the same timer at the same time? I'm not sure whether the above can be true. Whether there is other way to make a time run at the same time on different cpu? If it can happen, the timer callback function must take smp safe into consideration. Regards Rednoah

Not getting login prompt after CPU entered into cpu_idle() state

Hi All, We have ported the kernel from 2.6.10 version to 2.6.32 kernel version for our Phytec LPC-3180 board. We have done good work and able to complete the kernel part i.e. completed the start_kernel function and CPU entered into IDLE state from cpu_idle() function which is defined in rest_init() function in main.c file. However, rest_init() function also creates TWO threads. One thread is for running the kernel_init() function where it calls the init_post() function. In this, after a few other calls, there is a call to init the init-process i.e. run_init_process("/sbin/init"). After this, we are not seeing neither any errors nor login prompt in hyper terminal. We end up without getting any login prompt. Any idea would be greatly help us in getting the login prompt / for debugging the sources further for identifying the exact reason / location to find out the error. IPv6 route cache entry

Hi All, I am going through the linux IPV6 routing code and have a query on the route cache being maintained for IPV6 packets. Why is there no route-cahe hash list for IPv6 similar to IPv4? For ipv4 routing, we have ip_mkroute_input which creates the route-cache entry and adds it to the "rt_hash_table" Hash Table. For all the subsequent packets, the route look up from the routing database being maintained in trie is avoided. The route cache from the hast list is used. But in IPv6, it appears that the route-cache entry, is being maintained in the routing tree data structure itself. This would require a route-look to happen over the routing database for every packet . What is the basic idea behind this change. What would be the disadvantages if a hash list similar to ipv4 is maintained for IPv6 route cache. Thanks. Regards, Sai Naidu

Hi all, I am trying to use perf tools for ARM architecture. I did the following things on x86 PC 1) I compiled my linux kernel with kernel version 2.6.32 (coz perf tools are available from this version) 2) And In the user space i installed corresponding linux-tools-2.6.32. After these steps i am able to succesfully run my perf tools on my ubuntu pc. Now i want to follow the same procedure for Android device. The problem i am facing is in step (2). In Android how do i port linux-tools-2.6.32 ? Please tell me whether it is feasible or not? if yes, suggest any pointers.. -- With regards, Sandeep Kumar Anantapalli,

Dear all "struct ktermios" is the struct used for terminal. Why the header file is put at arch/mips/include/asm/termbits.h Doesn't it should located at kernel/include? -- Regards
