My first guess is that you failed to include a proper driver for your
graphics card, so it's coming up in 640x480 VGA emulation mode.

Go into 'make menuconfig',  "Device Drivers", "Graphics Support", and
make sure you have selected DRM and framebuffer as needed to match your
actual hardware.
