In case anyone is interested, this config produces a very small kernel: $ size vmlinux text data bss dec hex filename 819692 138004 1157164 2114860 20452c vmlinux That's 800k of text. It's hard to reduce it more, without seriously hacking the code. This kernel can boot a shell ok, with initramfs, but it's very stripped. It has not printk, so it doesn't log anything, and it has no proc: # CONFIG_PRINTK is not set # CONFIG_PROC_FS is not set Regards, Ezequiel.

Now that's something I can't answer definitively. I just guess that, somewhere inside kernel code, there is certain code that can't be toggled on or off i.e it is always enabled. And that code, one of them, is tackling this initramfs unpacking.

(Though I still don't understand how does initramfs works) It's fairly easy, but to my surprise, there isn't much documentation that explains in detail the process of running with initrd, versus the process of running with initrd.
