how to delete kernels cleanly

Doesn't help you at the moment, but in the future if you build the
kernels (and headers etc) as .deb packages (e.g. via 'make-kpkg') and
install them with 'dpkg -i', you can later uninstall them with a
single invocation of 'dpkg -r'.
